The leaders of the Senate said on Monday that the decision of inviting President Traian Basescu at the anniversary of the Senate belongs only to the speaker of the upper chamber Calin Popescu Tariceanu who reasserted his decision not to invite the Head of State.
“PDL parliamentary group sent a letter to the standing committee regarding the invitation of President Traian Basescu at this solemn session. The request of PDL group was put on vote and it was approved with six votes in favour and two against, that this matter should lie only with the Senate president, who also signed all the invitations given by now to the participants in this solemn session,” said Senate Deputy Speaker Cristian Dumitrescu (PSD).
Senate Speaker Calin Popescu Tariceanu said on Wednesday that he did not invite President Traian Basescu to avoid an awkward moment, considering that the Head of State has constantly advocated a single-chamber parliament.
Tariceanu stated on Monday that nothing changed, President Traian Basescu is not invited.
