President Iohannis: ‘ELI-NP project places Romania high on the map of fundamental research’

President Klaus Iohannis says the scientific laser project in Magurele (southwest of Bucharest) will place Romania in a top position in terms of fundamental research.In a visit to the Extreme Light Infrastructure – Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP) Research Centre of Magurele on Thursday, he promised adequate solutions to logistics problems of the construction.

‘I had the opportunity to visit the Institute of Magurele today and see where the greatest scientific project in the region was prepared. I’m talking about the high-power laser and nuclear physics applications facility, a very ambitious project which surely will place Romania very high on the map of countries where fundamental research is carried out. I think this is very important, and I have to admit that it fortunately meets my concept of education in Romania, which according to my proposals should yield highly qualified experts, precisely what will happen here, too,’ Iohannis declared.

He claimed the project was also a step towards bringing back Romanian researchers established abroad.

The head of state appreciated that the current stage of the ELI-NP Centre was ‘approximately OK’; he mentioned works were a little behind schedule.

‘I understood there are several logistics-type problems in the progress of works; surely adequate solutions can be found and I am looking forward to attending the 2018 inauguration,’ Iohannis said.

Nicolae Victor, the director of the Horia Hulubei National Institute of Physics and Nuclear Engineering in Magurele, was the President’s host at the ELI-NP project and presented him the works in progress there.

 

Italy plays a significant role in the ELI-NP project

 

The Italian Embassy in Bucharest has expressed its appreciation for the visit of the President of Romania to the Nuclear Physics Centre in Magurele and especially for the ELI-NP ((Extreme Light Infrastructure – Nuclear Physics) project where Italy has a fundamental role. During the past months the competition for the development of the GSB (Gamma Beam System) project ended. It was won by a European consortium led by the Italian Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN). Other prestigious European research institutions and companies are part of the winning consortium. In November last year, within the Italian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Ambassador of Italy, Mr. Diego Brasioli, together with the Representation of the European Commission in Romania, promoted the visit of EU member states’ ambassadors to the ELI-NP project financed with European funds, with the support and participation of the Minister-delegate for Scientific Research and of the Minister for European Funds.
