Presidential candidate Tariceanu says rival Macovei’s mission is to attack him

Liberal Reforming Party (PLR) leader Calin Popescu Tariceanu claims that presidential candidate Monica Macovei is only running to launch public attacks against him; he mentions that he will have a constructive campaign, but will reply to any unfair attack.

‘I have received Mrs. Monica Macovei’s announcement of her intention to run for president of Romania with some degree of surprise, given that her party officially nominated another candidate for this position. Her subsequent attacks against me and other components of her attitude dissipated my uncertainty. As an active member of [President] Traian Basescu’s team, and despite the bellicose declaration they issued to each other, Monica Macovei now has two missions, as a part of the plan devised by Basescu: public attacks ‘below the belt’ against me, to lower my chances of getting to the second round of the [November presidential] election, because it’s a known fact that I have always been a fearsome opponent of the President of Romania; and drawing the public attention to her and increasing her influence on the so-called Rightist party,’ the head of PLR said in a release.

According to Tariceanu ‘the more influent people close to Basescu are, the quicker and efficient will his takeover of the party will be, when his term ends.’

‘I have set myself the goal, and I will lead a constructive election campaign, based on great projects for Roman. This does not mean that I won’t most promptly and exigently reply to any attack ‘below the belt’, so that the electorate is not confused by the manoeuvers of Team Basescu,’ the PLR chairman added.
