Social-Democratic Party (PSD) leader, Prime Minister Victor Ponta announced on Friday that the Social Democrats will most likely hold a congress on September 12 to validate his presidential candidacy; the launch ceremony will be held on September 20.
‘We shall most likely hold the congress that will validate the election results in all county organizations on September 12. I really don’t think there will be surprising results, given that I am the only candidate, I believe I will have the necessary support. The launch ceremony of my candidacy will take place in Bucharest on September 20. Then, as of October 2, we enter the election campaign,’ the PSD leader said in Tulcea (south-eastern Romania), at the end of an informal meeting of the party’s central leadership, attended by local leaders and Social Democrat ministers.
Ponta also said that throughout the election campaign, Deputy Prime Minister Gabriel Oprea will take over all tasks related to the Government’s current activity.
‘I will give him a mandate, not only a mandate, but also the fact he will be in Bucharest, at the headquarters of the Government, after all, he is the interior minister, of course, for all aspects of the day-to-day activity. But the Government sitting, at least two or three days per week will obviously be devoted to my obligations and attributions as prime minister. The same is valid for Mr. Dragnea as deputy prime minister, minister of development, although he is our election campaign manager the rest of the time. And all the other measures we have to adopt to meet our obligations under the agreement with the International Monetary Fund, the European Commission, World Bank, to have a very clear political position on the crisis that is becoming more serious,’ Victor Ponta said.
