Romania nominates “Aferim!” by Radu Jude to compete for Academy Awards

The film ‘Aferim!’ by Radu Jude is Romania’s nomination for the best foreign language film at the 2016 Academy Awards, the National Filmmaking Centre of Romania (CNC) reported in Tuesday in a press statement.

The film is the 2015 recipient of the Silver Bear for best director at the Berlin Film Festival.

Seen as one of the biggest Romanian cinema projects of the past years, ‘Aferim!’ is a historic drama unfolding in the early 19th century Wallachia. The main character is a sheriff (Teodor Corban). He and his son (Mihai Comanoiu) hunt down a fugitive Gipsy man (Cuzin Toma).

Also starring are Alexandru Dabija, Luminita Gheorghiu, Victor Rebengiuc, Alberto Dinache, Alexandru Bindea, Mihaela Sarbu, Adina Cristescu, Serban Pavlu, Gabriel Spahiu and Dan Nicolaescu.

The script is by Radu Jude and Florin Lazarescu; cinematography by Marius Panduru; film editing by Catalin Cristutiu, and sound design by Dana Lucretia Bunescu. Costumes are by Dana Paparuz, and the settings by Augustina Stanciu. Historical adviser is Constanta Vintila-Ghitulescu, and producer Ada Solomon.

“Aferim!” is a Hi Film, Klas Film Bulgaria, Endorfilm the Czech Republioc and Mulberry Development Romania co-production with the participation of Nu Boyana Film Studios, U-Films, Production XMG Media, Abis Studio, Division Camera, in association with EZ Films and the participation of HBO Romania.

The film was sponsored by the National Filmmaking Centre of Romania, the Bulgarian National Film Centre, the Czech Cinematography Fund, the MEDIA programme of the European Union and supported by Eurimages, the Council of Europe fund for filmmaking.

The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film is handed out annually by the U.S.-based Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States of America with a predominantly non-English dialogue track.
