Romanian ‘mici’ legalized as of February 20


Tomorrow, the Standing Committee on Food Chain of the European Commission will authorize the preparation of mici (grilled ground meat rolls) after the traditional Romanian recipe. According to the new list of food additives that came into effect June 1, 2013, sodium bicarbonate was banned from being used in preparing mici, Sorin Minea, president of Romalimenta, stated yesterday for Agerpres. 10,000 tons of mici are consumed in Romania every year, but the black market probably accounts for 70 or 80 percent, Minea estimated. In 2012, the domestic mici market amounted to 22,000 tons, of which 72 per cent was covered by modern retail sales. Through the Romanian Meat Association, Romania requested the EC last year to include the product known as mititei in the category of traditional products that are not subject to this regulation, along with burgers and the Spanish chorizo. Following Romania and other Member States’ requests, the EC agreed to review the Regulations.
