Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, world number two, on Wednesday defeated Russia’s Maria Sharapova 6-2 6-2, for the first time in her career, advancing to the women’s singles quarter-finals of the 6,381,679-USD China Open tournament.
Second-seed Halep, 26, won her first match against the Russian after seven consecutive losses, most recently about one month ago at the US Open first round.
She displayed an almost perfect play in Beijing, where back in 2012 she lost to Sharapova in two sets. This time she won in an hour and 12 minutes.
Halep, who last year was defeated in the round of 16 in Beijing, won 149,138 US dollars and 215 WTA singles points. In the quarter-finals, she meets the winner between 11th-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland and Russian Daria Kasatkina.
“I think I played my best tennis against Sharapova”
“I think I played my best tennis against her,” tennis player Simona Halep said after her first victory in her career against Russian Maria Sharapova, 6-2 6-2 in the round of 16 of the WTA tournament in Beijing.
“It was a great match, I think I played my best tennis against her. I served pretty well, and the work that I did after the US Open, I could see it on court today. I’m really happy that I could do this. It’s my first victory against her and I just want to enjoy the moment,” Halep, the world’s no. 2, was quoted as saying by the WTA website.
“I just want to be happy about what I did today, and tomorrow I can think about the next one,” Halep added.
“I saw if I’m focused and I’m confident, I can hit the maximum that I can. I was very consistent today, there with confidence and just hitting the ball. I was relaxed and…actually many times I played against her, I felt like I could….beat her, but it didn’t happen,” said the Romanian tennis player.
“Today, I said it’s just another match, I just wanted to give everything I have, stay focused, calm and positive,” she added.
