Rosia Montana project – blocked without political backing

The Rosia Montana project is blocked until there is clear political backing, Premier Victor Ponta stated, adding that personally he considers that for Romania it is nevertheless better for all natural resources, including gold, to be used provided all environment regulations are respected. Asked whether Rosia Montana has another chance at this moment, Ponta answered: “Until there is clear political backing, no.” He pointed out that personally he considers that it is better for the country for all natural resources, including gold, to be used as long as all environment regulations are respected. “What happened with this project was similar to what happened in the case of shale gas, it didn’t even start and they already knew it would be bad. I am in favour of using natural resources,” Ponta added.
In 2011, back when he was in the opposition, Ponta was saying that President Traian Basescu’s statements in favour of the Rosia Montana mining project are an attempt to protect his elections campaign sponsors and that the Head of State is thinking solely about his personal gain and never about Romania’s interests.
At the start of June the Lower Chamber rejected the draft law concerning the mining of gold and silver at Rosia Montana, several MPs pointing out that it was also a consequence of the civil society’s street protests.
