The Royal Family presented on Thursday the line of succession and pointed out that the princesses’ husbands and children do not have personal titles. The information was offered against the backdrop of King Michael’s worsening medical condition and of the scandal sparked by ex-Prince Nicolae’s attempt to enter the King’s residence in Switzerland to see his grandfather. According to the information provided, King Michael is the current head of the Royal Family, Crown Princess Margareta is the heir, and Princess Elena is next in the succession line.
“The titles of the Members of the Royal Family of Romania, as well as the Succession Line, are determined by the Organic Norms of the Royal House of Romania. Thus, according to them, His Majesty King Michael I, King of Romania (jure sanguinis), is the current Head of the Royal Family of Romania. Her Royal Highness Margareta, Crown Princess of Romania (jure sanguinis), is the current Heir to the Leadership of the Royal Family of Romania, who will from now on be and will remain after the death of His Majesty, Custodian of the Crown of Romania (ad personam). The current consort of the Heir to the Leadership of the Royal Family of Romania is His Royal Highness Radu, Prince of Romania (ad personam),” the Royal Family informs.
The members of the Royal Family of Romania are: Her Royal Highness Elena, Princess of Romania (jure sanguinis); Her Royal Highness Sofia, Princess of Romania (jure sanguinis); Her Royal Highness Maria, Princess of Romania (jure sanguinis).
“The husbands and children of their Royal Highnesses do not hold personal titles,” the Royal Family points out.
“The line of succession to the throne and to the leadership of the Royal Family of Romania is based on the principle of primogeniture, preferably male, the Organic Norms thus abrogating the Salic principle of absolute male primogeniture with the exclusion of women and their descendants,” the Royal Family points out.
Basically, at present the succession line is the following: 1. HRH Crown Princess Margareta of Romania, Custodian of the Romanian Crown; 2. HRH Princess Elena of Romania; 3. Elisabeta Karina de Roumanie; 4. HRH Princess Sofia of Romania; 5. Elisabeta Maria Biarneix; 6. HRH Princess Maria of Romania.
Changes to it can be brought by the Head of the Royal Family of Romania.
