Senate turns down Lustration Law
The Senate plenum on Tuesday rejected the Lustration Law, a legislative document deemed unconstitutional in March 2012. After the voting result, Senate Speaker Crin Antonescu said that, under the Constitutional Court decision, discussions on the said over the past 20 years came to a close. Parliamentarians cast 118 votes against the Lustration Law on temporary access restriction to public office and dignities for persons who had been part of the power structures of the communist regime during March 6, 1945 – December 22, 1989. The Chamber of Deputies is the decision-making House on the bill. The draft law was laid before the Senate in the summer of 2005, and passed on May 19, 2010, yet it was challenged in the Constitutional Court, which ruled the Lustration Law unconstitutional in March 2012.
