The Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) issued a message on Monday, “following the latest events and public statements,” saying that it is regrettable that false statements are being made and groundless accusations are being levelled against the institution and that it condemns these “denigration attempts.” SRI Director Eduard Hellvig gave assurances that the Service does not get involved in power games or public debates.

“It is regrettable that an attempt is being made to draw the Romanian Intelligence Service into an area of speculations, through false statements, groundless accusations and the defamation of the Service’s cadres. The SRI firmly condemns these attempts to denigrate the institution and assures its domestic and external partners that it will remain anchored in its missions that exclusively concern national security. SRI Director Eduard Hellvig assures all the citizens of Romania of non-involvement in any kind of power games, of keeping the institution outside political debates, and of determination in the conjugated effort to preserve national security,” the SRI points out.

PSD leader Liviu Dragnea stated last Friday that he is not frightened by President Klaus Iohannis, SRI Director Eduard Hellvig, DNA Chief Prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi and ex-President Traian Basescu. “My decision is very firm. I remain at the helm of the PSD to carry these things through, and I will. I also remain within the leadership of the parliamentary majority alongside president Calin Popescu Tariceanu. The no-confidence motion will not pass. On the other hand, my colleagues and I, we have decided today to be much firmer and far more radical in all we must do. I am not frightened by Iohannis, Hellvig, Pahontu, Kovesi, Basescu, Ponta, Oprea and others. The objectives I committed to and for which I took responsibility remain the same and, together with my colleagues, I will carry them through,” Liviu Dragnea warned.
