Stylized wolf to be the logo of Romania’s Presidency of the Council of the EU

The competition for the selection of the logo of Romania’s 2019 presidency of the Council of the European Union was won on Thursday by Ioan Nicolae Dobrinescu, student at the ‘I.L.Caragiale’ National College in Bucharest, whose logo represents a stylized wolf.

The ceremony took place on Thursday, at the ‘I.L.Caragiale’ National College in Bucharest, in the presence of Education Minister Liviu Pop and Minister-delegate for European Affairs Victor Negrescu.

“I don’t know whether other EU countries have resorted to such an overture to select a logo. Even if a politician clings to this logo, I apologise on his behalf, even though he is from the Opposition,” the Education Minister said.

European Affairs Minister Victor Negrescu pointed out that the overture sought to popularise the presidency of the Council of the European Union, which Romania will hold for 6 months, starting on 1 January 2019. “We believe the goal has been attained,” Negrescu said.

He added that 10,000 people voted in favour of the winning logo and this competition took place transparently and openly.

“The message is that we support an educated, creative Romania of talented young people,” the European Affairs Minister emphasised.

Negrescu explained that the Education Ministry and the Foreign Affairs Ministry were not involved in the voting process.

“The Education Minister and the Foreign Affairs Ministry were not involved, we didn’t vote. We had experts from the media, European affairs experts, advertising experts, precisely because we didn’t want to vitiate this process, to influence it with our points of view. (…) Political involvement did not exist, we only organised the event and I believe we organised it very transparently and everyone was able to participate,” Victor Negrescu said.

Ioan Nicolae Dobrinescu, the winner of the competition, explained the significance of the logo.

“For me, the European Union must be confident, strong. Yes, like a wolf. A wolf that is present in all European cultures, from what I’ve learned in history class,” Dobrinescu said.

The winner was awarded EUR 3,000 and a visit to Brussels.

The winning logo will be stylized and implemented following technological expertise. Over 200 people participated in the competition. Nineteen reached the final and five winners were selected. The winners were selected by jury decision (50 percent) and by the points and messages they obtained on social media (50 percent).
