The High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ, Romania’s Supreme Court) upheld on Friday the request of the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) to resume criminal prosecution against former ministers Alexandru Athanasiu and Ecaterina Andronescu.

DNA prosecutors have requested on June 22 that magistrates confirm the resuming of criminal prosecution in a case involving Alexandru Athanasiu and Ecaterina Andronescu for abuse of office and public purchases made during their tenure as education ministers.

Judiciary sources say the charges are similar to those in the Microsoft software licenses case, in which Athanasiu (minister of education in 2003-2005) was charged in September 2014 of abuse of office, bribery, influence peddling and money laundering, and Andronescu was charged of the same crimes after allegedly pretending and receiving from the Siveco Company illegal benefits – money or computers – in 2001-2009, to secure the proceeding of projects with the Ministry of Education.
