Targeted by criminal probes, Gabriel Oprea resigns from UNPR leadership.Neculai Ontanu to lead the party ad interim

Gabriel Oprea resigned on Thursday from the office of UNPR President, Neculai Ontanu taking over the party’s leadership ad interim. Gabriel Oprea pointed out in a press communiqué that his choice for the position of future UNPR President is Valeriu Steriu, “a man whose professionalism is recognized by all parties and a leader with special potential. Of course, the decision will belong to UNPR’s statute forums, however I believe I have both the right and the obligation to tell the team I have led what my recommendation is for the office I am leaving today.”

The former Deputy Prime Minister explained his decision by arguing that he does not want the talks surrounding his criminal cases to affect the party during an elections year. “So I’ve decided to resign from the office of UNPR President today. It’s not an easy decision, but it’s one of the things I can still do in order to give the party and the entire team an extra chance during this electoral year,” Oprea stated.

The Senator encouraged his colleagues to maintain the party’s current line, as established on its creation in 2010. “For me it’s a great achievement to look today at the party we have built from scratch. That is why I ask you to maintain UNPR’s national orientation, to always place the national interest at the centre of political action and not to abandon the principles that made this party an emblem of fairness and determination. Romania needs courageous people and continues to need security and prosperity. Thus, we have the obligation to go forward, together, on the same path,” Oprea said.

Oprea plans to remain a simple UNPR party member. “I’ve done my duty toward UNPR, toward the team, and I continue to do my duty, including by filing my resignation from the office of president,” Gabriel Oprea added.
