Targu-Mures mayor in conflict with Orthodox Church

The money requested to the local authorities to built the Cathedral of Romanian People’s Salvation issued a public argument between mayor of Targu-Mures Dorin Florea and the Romanian Orthodox Church (BOR), as the official accused the political “bias” of the Church, according to Mediafax. The conflict stemmed from statements of the mayor published by the local media on January 30. Thus in an article with the title “Dorin Florea: BOR is the politicians’ accomplice,” the Targu-Mures mayor says, in the context of BOR request for funds for the Cathedral, that “the true salvation of the people means now to get involved and drag this people from a plunge towards mediocrity, subculture and lack of education. These seem major problems which the Church should get involved in, not to be biased, partner or blame others,” added Dorin Florea, quoted by the local media. As a reply the Romanian Orthodox Church said in a release that the letter sent by them to the representatives of the local authorities for financial support for the Cathedral of Romanian People’s Salvation is a measure in accordance with the law that rules that upon the demand of the Church Administration, the local and central authorities can financially support the building of the upcoming Cathedral.
