Senate’s Speaker Calin Popescu Tariceanu claims that “President Klaus Iohannis should take at least now, in the last moment, an unequivocal position on the unfortunate influence of the parallel system of power on justice”.

“Today, I watched with interest the debates at the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) related to the undercover magistrates, and I hail the courage to lay on the table this major problem not only for justice, but also for the democracy in Romania. We are in the situation in which the press presents information about the unfortunate influence of the parallel system, magistrates’ organizations are asking for explanations, but there are certain things said within CSM; only President Iohannis ‘pretends nothing happens’, to use a well-known phrase. In any democratic state, the President would take a stand” Tariceanu also claims in a Facebook post on his page.

The ALDE leader says that Klaus Iohannis was asked to take public position on this matter throughout his term.

“Two years ago, in January 2016, the national Union of Romanian Judges (UNJR) asked him to shed light on the matter of the undercover magistrates. President refused at that time and many other times. Several months ago, Klaus Iohannis stated that ‘the story with the parallel state is a pretty bad joke’. All these silent moments or replies inappropriate for a head of state define the main failure of President Iohannis’s mandate and reveal him as a man of the parallel system he wants to benefit from in order to get another five years at Cotroceni. The main assessment that Romanians will make on President Iohannis’s mandate is if he preferred a distant and warm position as a defender and beneficiary of the parallel system of power, or if he had the courage, even in the last moment, to take a stand against the anti-democratic manifestations of this system” Calin Popescu Tariceanu states.
