Horia Tecau (Rom) and Max Mirnyi (Belarus) are expected to move up to ninth in the Emirates ATP Doubles Team Rankings after winning their third ATP World Tour team title on Sunday at the China Open in Beijing, defeating Italians Fabio Fognini and Andreas Seppi 6-4, 6-2, atpworldtour.com reports. Mirnyi and Tecau received 250 Emirates ATP Doubles Team Rankings points and split USD 164,580 in prize money. They are looking to claim one of the six remaining spots at the Barclays ATP World Finals next month in London.
The Belarusian/Romanian duo saved eight of the nine break points they faced and broke their opponents for times to claim victory in 68 minutes. They added to the titles they won in Bucharest (d. Dlouhy/Marach) and s-Hertogenbosch (d. Begemann/Emmrich) and have a 3-2 finals record this season. This is the fifth time this year Mirnyi and Tecau have been in a double’s championship match. They were the runners up in Sydney International in January and the ATP International Tennis Championships in March.
Tecau, who had finished runner-up in Beijing two years ago with Robert Lindstedt, won his 16th ATP World Tour title. The 36-year-old Mirnyi improved to a 48-41 finals record. “Thanks to all the Chinese fans who came out to all of our matches,” Tecau said at the awards ceremony following the game, according to chinaopen.com. “There was always a big crowd, and it’s more fun for us to play in front of a crowd, so thanks for coming out every day, not just today.”
“This is one of our most favorite tournaments,” Mirnyi said. “We’re happy we won and we wish (Fognini and Seppi) good luck for the rest of the year.” Fognini and Seppi had been winless together (0-4) coming into Beijing, but put together an impressive run to knock out third seeds Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Rohan Bopanna in the quarter-finals and top seeds Daniel Nestor and Leander Paes in the semi-finals.
