If strong earthquake occurs, Focsani, Ploiesti and Buzau would be among the most affected cities after Bucharest.
The Romanians with Internet connection will be notified a few seconds before a strong earthquake comes. Meanwhile, the authorities are looking, in Brussels, money for the buildings’ restoration.
In case an earthquake occurs at around 21.00 hours, 6.500 Bucharesters could lose their life, 16.000 would be seriously injured, 10.500 – hospitalized, 13.000 – slightly wounded, and 95.000 would remain captive.
Once Romania has been rocked by several earthquakes, the authorities think about warning the people when a strong earthquake occurs. The problem is that not everyone will be able to know beforehand when it will occur. Contacted by the Evenimentul zilei daily, the Minister for Higher Education, Scientific Research and Technological Development, Mihnea Costoiu, explained how and when it might be implemented the warning system. “There is a working group that will determine which earthquakes will be announced. There will be the strongest ones. Currently we are negotiating with the phone companies. It’ll be an application for the mobile smartphones’ type, because we have no money to pay for millions of SMS. The user shall download the application and so he will receive the information in real time,” said Costoiu, who added that the system will be implemented early next year.
According to the delegated minister, the same rule will be valid also for computers: “Those who sit in front of a computer will see a warning message that will announce them that an earthquake is about to happen.” He added that, starting the second semester of the school year, there will be introduced in the school curriculum classes during which the students will learn how to react in case of earthquakes, and in case of other disasters that may occur. However, the government officialities say they are working on implementing a program dedicated to the restoration of the educational institutions’ buildings developed with European money.
Cities in Romania with seismic risk
The fear of earthquakes is becoming higher and higher. If an earthquake similar to the one in 1977 occurs, Focsani, Ploiesti and Buzau would be among the most affected cities. These, of course, after Bucharest, which tops the cities with buildings with seismic risk, shows a study conducted by Gandul daily.
The study also shows that we should be prepared in case of an earthquake, but we are not. That’s because we completely ignore the buildings with seismic risk and we don’t take care of them. In case of a serious earthquake, the most affected Romanians will be the Bucharesters. But big problems will be also in Focsani, Ploiesti, Buzau, Targoviste, Craiova, Giurgiu and three other cities.
Nationwide, more than 650 buildings are included in the 1st class of seismic risk and are considered public danger, 190 being only in the capital. At this number are added about 2.400 buildings with lower seismic risk. If we take a look at the number of earthquakes recorded this year in Romania, we note that it is higher than last year.
The seismologists have recorded around 300 earthquakes, 175 in the Vrancea area, while last year there were only 263.
