Traian Basescu and Catherine Ashton consider security situation in eastern Ukraine to be ‘extremely concerning’
President Traian Basescu on Thursday at the Cotroceni Palace welcomed Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, on which occasion both the two dignitaries deemed the situation in eastern Ukraine as being ‘extremely concerning’.
According to a release of the Department of Public Communication of the Presidential Administration remitted to Agerpres, Traian Basescu also spoke of the European Union’s need to firmly support the solving of the security crisis by restoring the control of the legitimate Ukrainian authorities in the regions occupied by illegal armed groups.
In the opinion of the two high officials, the European Council meeting of August 30 in Brussels will represent another occasion for the member states to reaffirms their support for Ukraine in dealing with the aggression it has been subjected to over the past months.
Traian Basescu thanked the distinguished European guest for the constructive manner in which she understood to promote the joint interests of the European Union in the solving process of international crises or conflicts and stated that he believed the merit of supporting the assertion of the Union as a global actor is even more important given the particularly difficult security situation she was facing during her mandate, the quoted release shows.
