Chairman of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) Kelemen Hunor stated on Monday, at the end of the opening festivities of the building of the new Hungarian-language theoretical High school, “Nemeth Laszlo” in northwestern Baia Mare, that the restitution of the building and its transformation in a school shows the involvement of local authorities and represents a positive example.
“First and foremost, what happened and is happening in Baia Mare is an extraordinary achievement and a positive example, for which I want to thank those who have been partners, the local authorities and not only them, that if you have the will you can do it, and if you want and think about the future of the community, good things can happen,” Kelemen Hunor said.
He considers that the mistakes of the Romanian education were caused by the great number of ministers who succeeded each other at the Ministry of Education’s helm.
He also brought up the situation of the Roman Catholic High School in central Targu Mures and he expressed his optimism about the reopening of the courses by the end of the year.
“We shouldn’t point to anyone. After all, we can manage to correct things together, and if we continually look for the guilty, we will not be able to overcome this moment. We have one more dissatisfaction for 2017, discontent that is not linked to the city of Baia Mare, it is linked to the Roman Catholic High School in Targu Mures, which has lost its legal capacity. By various pretexts, an unacceptable solution has been reached, but in the end, a school has been disestablished and that is the worst thing. And we said that we would start again, perhaps in a few weeks, and probably towards the end of the year, we will initiate the re-establishment of the Roman Catholic High School (…). Our aim is to follow the good example of Baia Mare,” Kelemen Hunor also said.
The UDMR Chairman has indicated that alongside the Romanian leaders he will plead for the maintenance of the Hungarian and Romanian language education in Ukraine after the Kiev City Council (also known as Kyivrada – ed.n.) has recently announced the suspension of the education in the languages of the minority ethnic populations living in this country.
“We stand in solidarity with our Hungarian brothers and our Romanian friends in Ukraine, and if possible, within the limits of our possibilities, because we are a political formation in our country, Romania, we still ask for President Porosenko’s (President of Ukraine) support not to promulgate this law,” Kelemen Hunor said.
The UDMR Chairman Kelemen Hunor was accompanied at the “Nemeth Laszlo” theoretical High school in Baia Mare opening festivity by Kover Laszlo, President of the Parliament of Hungary, also by Kovacs Iren Erzsebet, State Secretary at the Ministry of National Education, in charge with the minority language education, and Vida Noemi, deputy mayor of Baia Mare.
