Unemployment rate slightly advanced to 5.59 pc in December
The unemployment rate in the last month of last year was 5.59 pc, with 493,774 jobless, 17,454 more than in November, the National Employment Agency (ANOFM) announced yesterday. The unemployment rate recorded in December 2012 was 0.19 percent points higher than in November and 0.47 percent points above December 2011. Of the nearly 500,000 jobless that are registered with the Agency, 194,473 received unemployment benefits and 299,302 did not. The number of jobless was higher in December against November in 36 counties, with the most significant increases being reported by the counties of Alba (2,301 more), Hunedoara (+1,124), Harghita (+958), Valcea (+943), Arges (+907), Galati (+901) and Vaslui (876). The number of jobless decreased in the counties of Buzau (by 313 persons), Maramures (-292), Suceava (-247), Iasi (-169) and Ilfov (-38). In Bucharest, the number of jobless decreased by 125. The lowest unemployment rate in December was registered in the Ilfov County (1.83 pc). “Referring to the structure of unemployment based on instruction level, uneducated persons and those with basic education represent the majority (70.16 pc) of those who turn to county employment agencies in order to find a job.”

This article needs a definition of “unemplyment” because this figure certainly doesn’t include the majority of people who are unable to find regular work. I suspect that 50% would be closer to the real figure in many areas.
