US charge d’affaires ad-interim, awarded medal as his mandate concludes

President Traian Basescu signed Wednesday a decree for awarding a medal to the charge d’affaires ad-interim of the USA in Romania, at the conclusion of his mandate, for the outstanding contribution to the development of Romanian-American relations and the consolidation of the strategic partnership, the Presidential Administration announced. “President Traian Basescu awarded the National Order Star of Romania – in rank of Commander – to His Excellency Duane C. Butcher, charge d’affaires ad-interim of the United States of America in Romania, as sign of high recognition and appreciation for the constant friendship shown to our country, for the decisive contribution to the development of the strategic partnership Romania-USA,” reads the communique.
Also Wednesday, the American diplomat was received by the minister of Foreign Affairs, Titus Corlatean, at the end of his mission to Romania. “Minister Titus Corlatean thanked the charge d’affaires of the USA in Bucharest for his commitment and efforts in view of increasing the interest for the region and, in particular, for Romania, in the political and economic circles of the USA, and wished him luck in his future activity,” mentions a communique issued by MAE.
The talks also included the need for appointing a new American ambassador in Bucharest, the objective of including, within the shortest possible time, Romania in the Visa Waiver programme, given its status of strategic partner and member state of sthe EU, and Romania’s bid to take over the presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) in 2016. The charge d’affaires a.i. thanked the head of the Romanian diplomacy for the support granted during his assignment and appreciated the permanent opening to dialogue of the top officials in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while also outlining the special place held by Romania in his diplomatic career. He assured that he will constantly remain a close friend of Romania and will continue to contribute to the consolidation of the Strategic Partnership between the two states.
The US charge d’affaires in Bucharest, Duane C. Butcher, received Tuesday, on the occasion of the end of his mandate in Romania, the Honorary Plate of the Ministry of Interior (MAI) from Minister Gabriel Oprea.
According to MAI, Butcher was offered the Honorary Plate in the name of the Government of Romania and the Ministry of Interior, in a ceremony attended by his successor in office, Dean Thompson.
Oprea delivered a discourse in which he emphasized the “excellent collaboration with the Embassy of the United States” during the time when he was Minister of Defence and the importance for Romania of the antimissile shield being installed at Deveselu.
Minister Oprea added that Romania will keep its commitments assumed as member of NATO and partner of the USA.
In his turn, Butcher appreciated that “in terms of national security, Romania can be considered as a real fortress, an example for other states.”
He insisted on thanking specifically to the Romanian Police and Gendarmerie for the way they behaved during joint missions. The Honorary Plate represents the highest distinction of the MAI and is awarded to the Romanian and foreign personalities which constantly supported the ministry and had a major contribution to the development of national security.
