Women’s handball: Four more world champions sign for CSM Bucharest

CSM Bucharest announced on Thursday that Brazilian players Ana Paula Rodrigues , Deonise Fachinello Cavaleiro, Fernanda Franca da Silva and Mayssa Raquel de Oliveira Pessoa, all winners of the World Cup with Brazil in December 2013, have signed two-year contracts with the Bucharest-based women’s handball club, the club’s official website informs.
Rodrigues (center player), Cavaleiro (right wing) and Da Silva (left wing) will join the team at the end of the season, after they finish their contracts with Hypo Niederoesterreich. The three players scored ten goals in last year’s world cup final against Serbia (game won by Brazil, 22-20). Goalkeeper Pessoa will come from Russia’s Dinamo Volgograd, CSM informs.
Ana Paula Rodrigues (26) is two-time winner of the Austrian championship (2012 and 2013), and winner of the Cup Winners’ Cup (2013). Deonise Fachinello Cavaleiro (30) won the Spanish championship (2012), two Austrian championships (2009 and 2013) and a Cup Winners’ Cup (2013). Fernanda Franca da Silva (24) is two-time winner of the Austrian championship (2012 and 2013) and winner of the Cup Winners’ Cup (2013).
CSM Bucharest, a club that plans to equal and even surpass the performances registered by Oltchim Ramnicu Valcea, Romania’s top handball club that was recently disbanded because of financial reasons, has so far announced that it has signed another 6 champions: Linnea Torstenson, Ekaterina Vetkova, Talida Tolnai, Oana Manea and Iulia Curea, after previously signing Patricia Vizitiu too.
CSM is currently 7th in the National League standings, totaling 27 points after 19 legs, and is one point behind HC Zalau who is 6th, the last place that ensures a place in the play-off. The team’s goal this season is to qualify for the play-off then for a European cup, and over the next two years it plans to win the national title and a European cup.
