Work-in strike at National Library of Romania continues

The Union of the National Library of Romania and the Association of the Librarians at the National Library of Romania announce they will continue their work-in strike started on Friday until the Government Resolution 862/2013 through which the Ministry of Culture takes over in direct administration a third of the institution will be abrogated. According to a press release, the library union and the Association of the Librarians in the National Library of Romania are open to dialogue with the new leaders at the Ministry of Culture, in order to initiate a new government resolution, able to “correct this erroneous law, which brings prejudices to the public interest, to the open access to information, culture and knowledge.”
In the context of the work-in strike started on Friday, Minister of Culture Kelemen Hunor said that the Government resolution by which the institution he leads takes over a third of the National Library of Romania space must be amended so that the ground floor should remain to the cultural institution, stressing he has no intention that the Ministry of Culture should be the administrator or “master over the National Library.”
