“Still Life with Overweight Grandson,” by Ion Sapdaru is this year’s winner of the drama competition “The Best Romanian Play of the Year 2008,” organised the Romanian Theatres’ Union (UNITER). The jury of the competition included director Sanda Manu and theatre critics Alice Georgescu and Ion Cocora, who initially chose the works that entered the final selection. Afterwards, they decided the winning play. “Orient Expresso,” by Radu Macrinici, “The Perfect Day” by Antoaneta Zaharia, and “Dying for Your Country” by Mihai Ignat, “Airport” by Stefan Caraman and “Youtube” by Viorel Cojanu are the plays that entered the final selection, beside Sapdaru’s work. The Award for the Best Play of 2008 will be offered to its winner at the UNITER Awards Ceremony of April 27, and afterwards, the UNITEXT Publishing House of UNITER will publish the winning play in a volume. The Program “The Play of the Year” takes place annually, under the patronage of the Royal House of Romania.
