Elena Basescu gathers 200,000 signatures for EP race

President Traian Basescu’s daughter Elena Basescu, who is running as an independent candidate in the European Parliament elections this summer, told a press conference on Friday that she raised over 200,000 signatures in support of her candidacy. The list of signatures will be filed with the Central Electoral Bureau today.

Basescu said that the number of signatures she raised was a lot higher but that several thousand were declared invalid as the people who had signed did not give their complete data. She also thanked all PD-L organization members who helped her raise these signatures.

Basescu talks of Covasna County, where she gathered “a record number” of signatures – more than 2,000, but also the Democrat-Liberal Party’s branches in Constanta or Bucharest’s District 5. She added however that she was realistic and that she knew “signatures are not the same as votes”.

“I am not counting on the party’s support, because PD-L has the clear objective of winning the elections. I hope that those who are more like me, the non-conformist, will vote me,” she said. Elena Basescu added that she will make her political project for the elections public at the beginning of the election campaign. She said that her campaign will be headed bny her sister, Ioana Basescu and that the staff will be made of her friends from the PD-L’s Youth Organization.
