Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) leader Marko Bela said on Saturday in Targu Mures that the union will focus on European Parliament elections for the time being, not on naming a presidential runner. “Neither I nor anybody else thought of possible candidates or made a decision to have our own candidate. As I said on several occasions, only in June, after the EU elections, will we make such a decision. The greatest dilemma will be whether to have our own candidate or not,” Marko said. The UDMR leader believes the party should take into consideration new people in case it will have to decide whether to appoint a presidential runner. On the other hand, UDMR has completed its list of candidates for the European Parliament and the document was passed on Saturday in Targu Mures by the party’s Council of Representatives. The list of candidates, called the list of Hungarian Solidarity, was based on an accord between UDMR and CNMT, the National Council of Hungarians in Transylvania, under which the positions on the lists are split between the two, 75 per cent and 25 per cent. The first place on the list goes to Laszlo Tokes (CNMT), followed by Iuliu Winkler (UDMR), Csaba Sogor (UDMR), Zsolt Szilagy (CNMT), Petre Kovacs (UDMR) etc. UDMR says it has increased support among the Hungarian community and that it gathered 270,000 signatures for the EP elections, significantly more than the 200,000 necessary.
