Social Democrat Party’s Bucharest leader Marian Vanghelie said on Saturday on Realitatea TV that Traian Basescu will lose the presidential elections in the run-off. “In the run-off he will lose, there will be a negative vote against Basescu. People have had it with this circus, with what they have seen in Romania so far. People see that Basescu wants to be president and prime minister and interior minister and wants to have all leading positions in Romania,” Vanghelie said. The head of PSD Bucharest also denied that Mircea Geoana had a deal with Basescu, “as the media said”, and underlined that Geoana will surely defeat Basescu in the election. As for Adrian Nastase’s announcement that he would not run for president, Vanghelie said Nastase withdrew because “he understood how important it is for us to defeat Basescu”. “It was proof of fair play on his behalf because he supports Mircea Geoana in the fight against Basescu,” Vanghelie said, adding that ex Justice Minister Monica Macovei and Basescu “tried to push things so as to demand Nastase’s head”.
