Gov’t wants to lay off 20,000 teachers or to freeze wages, union leader says

The Government has decided to cut the number of the teaching staff by 20,000 or to freeze the wages, a measure that was not accepted by the representatives of the labour unions from within the Education system, Aurel Cornea, the president of the Free Labour Union Federation from within the Education System (FSLI), stated yesterday, Mediafax informs.

‘The Government decided that 20,000 people will be fired or that the wages will be frozen. Eventually a combination between the two could be reached. We won’t accept this sacrifice, we continue to disagree and we suspend the negotiations,’ Cornea said.

Cornea explained that the authorities want to reduce the Education system’s budget by RON 811 M when rectifying the budget. The budget rectification that will be done by the Government in the following period will lower all Ministries’ budget, the largest sums set to be cut from the Agriculture, Defence, Administration and Internal Affairs, and Education Ministries. The Labour Ministry will be the only one that will receive supplementary funds. Significant reductions will be operated for the Ministry of Education (a cut of RON 676 M) and for the Ministry of Administration and Internal Affairs (a cut of RON 427 M), according to Ministerial sources.

Through the budget rectification scheduled in the following period the state budget revenues estimated for 2009 will be diminished by RON 12.073 bln and the expenditures will be cut by RON 1.82 bln.
