Competition Council to investigate LPF and FRF

The Competition Council has opened two investigations seeking to identify possible practices that violate the competition regulations in what concerns the sale of broadcasting rights for football games, Gheorghe Oprescu, the president of the Competition Council, stated on Thursday.

‘We will investigate the Professional Football League (LPF) and the Romanian Football Federation (FRF) for possible infringements of the provisions of the Competition Law in what concerns the sale of commercial rights over football competitions. Likewise, we will also investigate whether the consortium formed by SC Antena 1 SA and SC RCS&RDS SA, the consortium that won the broadcasting rights, is observing the legal provisions in what concerns the sale of broadcasting rights’ the president of the Competition Council stated. The Competition Council is monitoring the situation since 2008, as a consequence of complaints filed by NGOs, citizens, fans and MPs. The information was analyzed by the Plenum of the Competition Council, a body that decided to launch the two investigations.
