The number of employees to be made redundant in 2009 by railway companies will stand between 3,500 and 3,700, and they will be sent to retirement, the president of the ‘Miscare Comercial’ Union Federation, Gheorghe Popa said yesterday, after a meeting with Transport Minister Radu Berceanu, Agerpres reports.
According to the union leader, an additional 850 people will be sent to unemployment from the branches of the three railway companies. Transport Minister Radu Berceanu explained that, aside from staff reductions, the Ministry also envisages expenditure cuts like freezing wages, reducing the number of trips and the amount of bonuses. “There are still many things to do, but it is a good thing that we agreed upon the number of employees to be sent to retirement, while tomorrow (Thursday) I will have also talks with the managers of railway companies, to convene the measures they must take in the future,” the Transport Minister pointed out.
Railway unions yesterday had a technical discussion with Minister Radu Berceanu.
“We met the Minister of Transport today, because we consider there is a gap in our relation with him,” Popa said. According to the union leader, railway restructuring plans cannot be enforced because unions cannot accept the sacking of 12,000 employees, while closing down 3,000 km of railroad would destroy them, as most railroads that got closed in Romania were eventually stolen and sold as scrap metal.
