King Michael was awarded on Thursday the Doctor Honoris Causa title by Universitatea de Vest in Timisoara, on the occasion of 65 years since the university’s creation by Royal Decree.
In the afternoon, the Timisoara Local Council also nominated the former sovereign as Honorary Citizen of the city.
The celebrations dedicated to the university’s anniversary opened with King Michael paying a visit to the ‘Eugen Todoran’ University Central Library, founded in 1944, also by Royal Decree, and with the unveiling of an effigy of Sever Bocu, the first ephor of Universitatea de Vest Timisoara. The Timisoara-based institution of higher education was founded through the Decree of His Majesty King Michael I-st, issued on December 30, 1944. The Decree provided for the creation of Universitatea de Vest, with the faculties of law, literature and philosophy, science, human medicine, veterinary medicine, pharmacy and theology.
Under the act, the Oradea Academy of Theology, provisionally relocated to Timisoara during the war, would turn into the Faculty of Theology within Universitatea de Vest.
The university is now a state public institution and has over 25,000 students in the 11 faculties, with more than 80 specialties and a training department for teaching personnel. On Friday, King Michael is due to meet the Metropolitan Bishop of Banat, IPS Nicolae.
