Harlem Gospel Choir was founded in 1986 by Allen Bailey and is presently one of the most famous choirs in America. In the almost 20 years that passed since the foundation of the group, the members of Harlem Gospel Choir entered the stages of some of the greatest performance halls in the USA, Germany, Poland, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, France, Holland, Lebanon, Korea and Japan, and performed with artists such as Diana Ross, Whoopi Goldberg, Harry Belafonte, Danny Glover, Gorillaz and Cindy Lauper, and performed in front of personalities such as Nelson Mandela, Pope John Paul II, Sir Elton John or Pope Benedict XVI.
Combining spirituality and Christian teachings with the rhythms and sounds of blues, gospel music appeared from the Christian hymns sung by Afro-American communities in the USA, at the beginning of the 20th century. The repertoire of the Harlem Gospel Choir includes some of the most beautiful titles of gospel music, songs such as “Lord, I’m Coming Home,” “Surely God Is Able,” “There Will Be Peace In The Valley,” “Oh, Happy Day,” “Amen” and “When The Saints Go Marching In.”
