Five legends of international gymnastics were awarded on Saturday, in Oklahoma, at the thirteenth edition of the International gymnastics Hall of Fame. Octavian Bellu, Viktor Chukarin (Ukraine), Dominique Dawes (the United States), Elvira Saadi (Uzbekistan) and Vitaly Scherbo (Belarus) entered the Hall of Fame list that now totalizes 69 members.
Bellu is the second Romanian coach included in the Hall of Fame, after Bela Karolyi in 1997. He was appreciated for his achievements with the Romanian ladies’ gymnastics team, especially for winning five subsequent world titles (1994 – 2001) and for two Olympic titles (2000 and 2004). “If they decided that I should be included in the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame, then I am sure that I did a good job. Gymnastics was my life, and I have always tried to do my best. We are not stars. The gymnasts are the stars. We are the ones to remain behind the curtains. Now, I am in the same family with my former trainees. What can be better than that?” Bellu declared as quoted by the International Gymnast Magazine.
The International Gymnastics Hall of Fame also includes Nadia Comaneci, Ecaterina Szabo, Teodora Ungureanu, Daniela Silivas and Simona Amanar.
