Unirea Urziceni – close to becoming Romania’s new champions

Unirea Urziceni has won on Sunday its away-game against FC Timisoara, score 2-1 (0-1), and could become Romania’s new football champions. The League I title will be decided on June 5 when the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will announce its decision on FC Timisoara’s sports record.

With one round to go before the end of the season Unirea Urziceni totals 69 points, 4 points more than Dinamo (65) and 8 more than FC Timisoara (61).

Dinamo has lost any chance of winning the title, but the CAS could overturn its six-point penalty against FC Timisoara, thus keeping the latter into the race for the title. That race would then be settled on the last round of the season on June 10. If FC Timisoara does not receive the six points from the CAS then Unirea Urziceni will become champion on June 5, with Dinamo set to finish the season on second place.

Valentin Velcea was appointed FC Timisoara’s interim coach for the last two rounds of the season after Gabi Balint was sacked because of his team defeat at the hands of Urziceni, Gheorghe Chivorchian, the president of FC Timisoara stated.
