Exotic birds worth EUR 140,000 on the lakes of Bucharest

The Lakes, Parks and Entertainment of Bucharest (ALPAB) intends to spend RON 481,970 (VAT not included), the equivalent of EUR 140,000, in order to populate the Herastrau, Cismigiu and Bordei lakes with exotic birds, according to an announcement posted on the Government’s website of public auctions. According to the ALPAB explanation, as quoted by Realitatea TV, the population of the lakes with exotic birds was necessary, as the lakes were part of Bucharest’s three most important parks, “places for rest and entertainment, and a possibility to spend one’s spare time as pleasantly as possible.” The auction documents mention that, in old times, there were exotic birds on the lakes of Bucharest, and they were placed in glass shelters in order to be protected in winter, yet, these shelters were ceased because of the lack of funds.

Among the birds to be purchased, there are Mandarin ducks, Caroline ducks, white peacocks, Harlequin peacocks, black swans, white and red sheldrakes. 19 pairs of swans and peacocks, 12 pairs of sheldrakes and 25 pairs of ducks will be brought to Herastrau, 24 pairs of swans and peacocks will be brought to Bordei Park, as well as ten pairs of sheldrakes and 20 pairs ducks, while nine pairs of peacocks, 12 pairs of swans, 19 pairs of ducks and 15 pairs of sherldrakes will be brought to Cismigiu.
