Successful debut for Lucescu: Romania defeats Lithuania, 1-0

Romania’s national football team has defeated Lithuania in an away game on Saturday evening, score 1-0 (1-0). The game counted for the World Cup 2010 preliminaries and was Razvan Lucescu’s first game as head coach of the national team. Striker Ciprian Marica scored the game’s only goal in the 39th minute.

Our team pulled off a good game, obtaining a well-deserved victory and giving us hopes for the team’s future. At the same time, Romania took revenge for the game it lost at the hands of Lithuania in Cluj last autumn (score 0-3).

The head coach told TVR that he was not nervous during his debut as head coach and opined that Romania could have defeated Lithuania at a higher goal difference because it had more goal scoring opportunities.

‘It was an evening I will never forget. I was not very nervous because I did not start coaching just the other day; I gained experience in the European Cups, an experience that many envy. I had no reason to be nervous. When you feel that the team is working, is careful, it has the will and the conviction, there is no reason to be nervous. Lithuania is a well-organized and aggressive team that can take its opponents by surprise. We were technically better. This is a result that does not adequately show what happened on the pitch. We had five or six significant goal scoring opportunities. I don’t know if Lithuania barely had half an opportunity’ Lucescu said.

He expressed his satisfaction with the players’ attitude in the game against Lithuania. ‘It is an important win for the debut, these are three important points, but we have to try to get the most out of each game with this confidence and state of mind. We continue to have very small chances to qualify, especially since those chances are dependent on the other teams. I have told the players before the game that one can have a poor day but can still gain the people’s appreciation through attitude, struggle and self-sacrifice. I am very pleased’ Lucescu said.

The national team’s next game is scheduled on August 12 when it will play in Budapest in a friendly against Hungary. Romania’s next WC 2010 preliminary game is scheduled on September 5 against France.
