The file on players’ transfers to resume in September

On Tuesday the Bucharest Court has postponed for September 7 the trial concerning the football players’ transfers, a trial in which George Copos, Mihai Stoica, Jean Padureanu, Gheorghe Popescu, Gigi Netoiu, Cristian Borcea, Ioan and Victor Becali are the defendants.

The court has postponed the trial again after finding out that the background dossier is within the Bucharest Court of Appeal. The latter will rule on June 12 on sports manager Victor Becali’s request for the removal of the sequester that the anti-corruption prosecutors had placed on his wealth. Moreover, the procedure involving FC Rapid SA has not been completed by now. On October 2, 2008, the National Anti-corruption Office (DNA) had sued George Copos, president and owner of FC Rapid Bucharest; Mihai Stoica, former director of Otelul Galati; Jean Padureanu, president of FC Gloria Bistrita and Gheorghe Popescu, former employee of the ‘Becali Sport’ Company. All of them had been charged with fraud, tax evasion and money laundering.

Gigi Netoiu, FC Dinamo’s former shareholder; Cristian Borcea, executive president of FC Dinamo, and Ioan and Victor Becali, sports managers, were also sued, being charged with fraud, tax evasion, money laundering and association in view of committing crimes. DNA claims that the deeds of the eight defendants have caused total losses of USD 1.5 M in the case of the state and over EUR 10 M in the case of four football clubs, with a part of the money obtained from transferring players being ‘laundered’ through off-shore companies.
