PDL seeks EP justice panel top post for Macovei, sources say

The Democrat-Liberals plan to demand the presidency of the European Parliament’s committee for civil liberty, justice and internal affairs for Monica Macovei, party sources said, quoted by Mediafax. The PDL, through the ten MEP seats and its affiliation to the biggest EP group, the one of the European Peoples’ Party, can have a committee president or vice president post in the European assembly. But the position depends on EP negotiations within political groups, according to the same sources.

But until the new MEPs’ seats will be validated, on July 14-16 in Strasbourg, PDL’s Euro-lawmakers have to choose what committee they want to join. Theodor Stolojan, the first on PDL’s list of MEPs, opted for the economic and monetary affairs committee, while ex Justice Minister Monica Macovei said she wants to join the justice committee. Traian Ungureanu and Cristian Preda chose the culture and education committee and the foreign affairs committee, respectively, while Marian-Jean Marinescu opted for the transport and tourism committee.

Rares Niculescu wants to join the agriculture committee and Iosif Matula registered for a position in the regional development panel. Sebastian Bodu opted for the justice affairs committee, while Petru Luhan and Elena Oana Antonescu, the last two MEPs, chose the industry and environment panels.

Independent MEP Elena Basescu, who re-joined the PDL after the elections, chose the budget committee.
