Scandal – BEC member attending Basescu’s party

The vice president of the Permanent Electoral Authority and a member of the Central Electoral Bureau, Ana Maria Patru, on Sunday evening attended a party staged by Democrat-Liberals, President Traian Basescu and his wife to celebrate the victory of the president’s daughter Elena Basescu in European Parliament elections, daily ‘Jurnalul National’ reported.

Patru arrived to the Pescarus restaurant in Bucharest on Sunday evening, after the voting process had ended. She was accompanied by several PD-L leaders and taken to the table by PM Emil Boc himself, according to Antena 3 reports. Patru sat at the same table with Democrat Liberals’ Youth Minister Monica Iacob Ridzi and Development Minister Vasile Blaga.

Parliamentary sources quoted by Antena 3 say Patru is a friend of Tourism Minister Elena Udrea, who reportedly helped her friend land the vice president post in the Permanent Electoral Authority. Patru’s predecessor as AEP vice president, Alexandru Radu, told ‘Jurnalul National’ that Patru should not have been to that party and that her gesture raises a series of questions about the professionalism with which people are appointed on posts in the Authority. A spokesperson for BEC, Marian Muhulet, however, defended his colleague and said there was nothing illegal with what she did, as she was not during working hours.

Opposition Liberal Party leader Crin Antonescu criticised the BEC member, saying that Patru’s presence at Basescu’s party goes “beyond any limits of common sense” and is proof of electoral fraud.
