Yellow code warning for rain, storms across the country

Storms already hit part of the country on Wednesday evening. One person was killed by lightning in Maramures and another in Arad.

Meteorologists yesterday issued a yellow code warning for heavy rain and storms almost all over the country, Realitatea TV reported. Only five counties were not likely to be affected by rain and storms, which are likely to hit Maramures, Transylvania, the largest part of Oltenia, Muntenia and Moldavia, along with mountain regions.

The yellow code warning was implemented yesterday at 3 p.m. and is to be lifted today at 6 p.m. Meteorologists also warned about atmospheric instability, with strong winds, storms, thunder and lightning and even hail, in 37 counties. Rain is expected to exceed 25-30 litres per square meter in most areas and 40-50 litres per square meter in mountain regions.

A powerful storm was expected to hit Bucharest as well yesterday evening, meteorologists said. “After the intense heat today and yesterday, the impact might be rather violent. So we have to be careful where we park our cars because it’s very likely to be a violent storm,” a representative of the National Meteorology Adminsitration, Viorica Dima, was quoted as saying by Realitatea TV. Meteorologists also said that the hot weather is expected to return during the weekend. Violent storms hit parts of the country on Wednesday evening. In TImisoara, a house was left without roof and dozens of trees were uprooted. Torrential rain flooded several streets of the city. In Brasov too, a house risks collapsing because of heavy rain, Antena 3 reported. In Maramures, a man was killed and his wife was severely injured after being hit by lightning during a violent storm. The woman was hospitalized in severe condition.

Woman died after being hit by lightning in arad county

A 55-year-old woman of Lipova City in Arad County passed away on Wednesday evening after she was hit by lightning while walking on a hill, Mediafax reported. According to the Press Bureau of the Arad County Police Department, the woman was on a hill at the border of the city and was going home, when a storm started.

The woman was hit by lightning and died instantly. Moreover, also because of the lightning, electricity was damaged in five localities in the Arad County, in the early hours of Thursday. The press bureau of Enel Arad announced that the storm partly affected the city Chisinau Cris and four localities nearby. All the Enel Arad teams are working in the affected areas, in order to repair the damages.
