The national water polo team of Romania won the Independence Cup, a competition that took place in Moscow and was attended by the teams of Serbia, Russia and Greece. After being defeated by Serbia, the European Vice-Champion and winner of the bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Beijing, in 2008, Romania won on Saturday, in the game of the Russian team, by 12 – 8 (3 – 4, 3 – 4, 1 – 0, 5 – 0) and defeated Greece on Sunday by 10 – 7 (2 – 1, 4 – 3, 2 – 1 and 2 – 2).
On Saturday, Serbia and Greece had an equal game of 9 – 9 and on Sunday, Russia defeated Serbia by 9 – 7 (1 – 2, 1 – 2, 3 – 2 and 4 – 1). The final standings were topped by the Romanian tea, trained by Istvan Kovacs, followed by Russia, Serbia and Greece.
