Victor Hanescu ranks 29th in ATP standings, best ATP standing in his career
Romanian tennis player Victor Hanescu has gone climbed two places in the ATP standings, now ranking 29th. This is Hanescu best ATP standing in his career. Spain’s Rafael Nadal continues to top the standings published on Monday by the international body’s official website.
Victor Crivoi, the other Romanian tennis player in the ATP top 100, has climbed one place to rank 87th. This week Crivoi will play in the Eastbourne tournament, a tournament with total prizes of EUR 450,000. In the first round Crivoi will play against Britain’s James Ward, the owner of a wild-card.

Raluca Olaru wins Marseille tournament
Romanian tennis player Raluca Olaru has won the USD 100,000 tournament in Marseille after defeating Slovenia’s Masa Zec-Peskiric in the final, score 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-4. Olaru, top seed number 6, finished the game in 3 hours and 21 minutes.
Olaru had defeated Italy’s Tathiana Garbin (top seed 3) in the quarterfinals (6-4, 2-6, 7-6) and Germany’s Andrea Petkovic in the semifinals, score 6-4, 7-6 (9).
Sorana Cirstea in last-16 stage of the Hertogenbosch tour
Romanian tennis player Sorana Cirstea has qualified for the last-16 stage of the WTA tournament in Hertogenbosch (Netherlands) after defeating Monica Niculescu in the opening round, score 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
In the last-16 stage Carstea, the top seed number 4 of the tournament with total prizes of USD 220,000, will play against the winner of the game that will pit Yanina Wickmayer (Belgium) against Maria Elena Camerin (Italy).
Cirstea and Niculescu will play against each other in the first round of the doubles event too. Niculescu is that event’s top favorite, alongside Anna-Lena Groenefeld (Germany), while Cirstea will play alongside Russia’s Dinara Safina.
Cirstea has won USD 21,950 and 30 WTA points, while Niculescu has won USD 1,725 and 1 WTA point.

Five died in severe traffic accident on DN 2A
Five persons lost their lives in a traffic accident that occurred yesterday morning in the Ialomita County. The traffic on the National Road (DN) 2 was stopped on both directions for approximately two hours between the Munteni Buzau and Cazanesti localities. According to the Info Traffic centre, the driver of a vehicle lost control over the wheel, and the car left the roadway and hit the tree. According to police representatives, the driver is likely to have fallen asleep while driving. As a result of the collision, all five passengers of the car lost their lives. The car was registered in Bucharest.
Man climbs Casa Presei Libere demanding Penescu’s freedom
A man claiming to be the owner of a Pitesti-based publication yesterday climbed Casa Presei Libere in Bucharest, demanding that FC Arges President Cornel Penescu should be released from custody. The Police say the 42-year-old man went up on the 13th floor of the building, holding a placard and asking for the release of Penescu who, according to him, poses no risk of re-offending to the public. The name of the protester is Stelian Jugarean, a former employee of the Pic company owned by Cornel Penescu. He has protested in similar ways in front of the Arges Tribunal and of the Pitesti Court of Appeal, both hearing Penescu’s case, always claiming to be on a hunger strike. FC Arges owner Cornel Penescu was arrested on April 14 in the referee-related corruption case, alongside the President of the Central Referees Commission, Gheorghe Constantin, the General Manager of the Pic hyper-market, Liviu Facaleata, as well as the ex-Director of the Arges Consumer Protection Office Cristian Libertatu. Cornel Penescu and Liviu Facaleata were charged with giving bribe and Gheorghe Constantin and Cristian Libertatu with taking bribe.

CNS Cartel Alfa unionists will stage a protest in Bucharest on June 9
The National Unions Confederation Cartel Alfa will organize on June 9, in Bucharest, a protest rally on the streets starting 11:00 AM, confederation vice-president Romulus Nita announced. “The Committee of the Confederation ruled that the Bucharest meeting will take place on June 9, from 11:00 AM. Representatives of all affiliated trade unions will take place, around 20,000 people,” Nita explained. The members of the Committee will decide, in due time, over the starting point and route of the march, in view of obtaining the required authorizations. According to the Cartel Alfa official, the protest will be aimed at authorities enforcing the medium and long-term action plan established with the social partners, the social package that was sent to the Cabinet, and the package of regulations necessary for the social dialogue.
Production resumes at ArcellorMittal Hunedoara
Production resumed yesterday at ArcellorMittal Hunedoara yesterday, after a nearly one-month lull due to lack of orders amid the economic crisis, Mediafax reports. According to the general director of ArcellorMittal Hunedoara, Remus Patan, almost all the 700 work force at the plant began work again. Production was brought on a halt on May 18, for the third time in the past eight months, due to lack of orders, with employees being given the option to choose between taking the holiday leave and technical unemployment whose pay equals 75 per cent of the regular salary, adding to which is the seniority bonus.

With Rabla II, you can buy several cars
The second phase of the Rabla Programme was to start on June 15, with two amendments: the introduction of light utility vehicles of up to 3.5 tons and the possibility for the same individual to buy more than one passenger vehicle, Agerpres informs. According to the Environment Minister, Nicolae Nemirschi, the aim of the programme is to remove 60,000 very old vehicles from the roads, ‘irrespective of the replacement brand or owners.’ As far as legal entities are concerned, Minister Nemirschi said they, too, would benefit from the programme, but only in its third phase starting from September 1. The Environment Minister said he had allocated 60,000 units over three years standing for a subsidy of EUR 54-55 M. According to a statistic of the Ministry of Environment, almost 7,100 units of the allocated 20,000 had been sold in the first phase of the Rabla Programme. Dacia was Romanians’ favourite brand, with the local maker actually being the only one to sell out its entire quota (1,731). The Renault/Nissan Group came in second with 1,020 units sold, followed by Skoda – 777 units. The only producers who have not been able to sell any vehicle through the Rabla Programme were Audi and Lada.
AAA New Kopel increases distribution network
AAA New Kopel, the second-hand vehicle division of the Sixt New Kopel, expands its distribution network in four other towns: Iasi, Suceava, Bacau and Constanta, according to an official press release issued by the company, Agerpres reported. The total value of the 150 available used cars is EUR 1.2 M, and the local expansion was determined by the agreement signed with Romil. “The recent partnership signed with Romil, that brought the expansion of the used automobiles’ division – AAA New Kopel subsidiaries in Iasi, Suceava, Bacau and Constanta, represent an important step in the expansion of Sixt New Kopel outside Bucharest. We continue expanding in the strategic direction we have established” Dudy Perry, General Manager of Sixt New Kopel declared.
AAA Next Kopel will be present in the following cities, with a subsidiary and a showroom: Iasi, Suceava, Bacau and Constanta. All subsidiaries have a total surface of 1,000 square metres and may host up to 40 cars.
This February, Sixt New Kopel and AAA Auto Group decided to join forces on the Romanian second hand cars’ market. The new company already trades these vehicles in Romania, and is named AAA New Kopel.
Wizz Air – leader of the air transport market in Romania
The low cost flight company Wizz Air, from the Central and East Europe, has become the biggest air operator in Romania subject to the number of passengers carried in the first quarter 2009, a press release remitted to the editorial office shows. The company carried 313,320 passengers, more than the other air operators from Romania (low cost and/or traditional companies).
This summer, the company expects to double its local fleet arriving at six new Airbus A320 aircrafts. This has allowed to increase the flight frequencies on some of the existing routes and to launch 11 new flights (from Cluj-Napoca to Bologna Forli, Madrid, Venice Treviso and Palma de Majorca; from Timisoara to Barcelona, Milan Bergamo, Paris Beauvais, Venice Treviso and Valencia; from Bucharest to Paris Beauvais and Madrid). The most recent stage in the development of Wizz Air in Romania is represented by the opening of the base from Timisoara, the third company at local level. Wizz Air objective in Romania for this year is to carry 1.7 million passengers on the routes from Romania.
Blue Air to begin to operate from Suceava airport to Vienna and Venice
The company Blue Air will begin, on July 15, to operate, from Suceava Airport, flights to Vienna and Venice. The company will also have a flight Suceava – Cluj Napoca, Mediafax informs. Suceava airport is going to be modernized, Suceava County Council negotiating with the Spanish group Rayet the possible granting of Suceava airport under concession in view of its development. According to Gheorghe Flutur, president of Suceava County Council, the Spanish group has transmitted to Suceava authorities a letter through which it announced that it will submit, until the end of June, a financial plan and a project for the granting of Suceava airport under concession.
