Foreign Minister Cristian Diaconescu conveyed a message yesterday to the Bucharest World Conference 35-year anniversary meeting, wherein he outlined that ‘the population is a unique, irreplaceable element, without which it makes no sense to talk of development.’Amid the global economic and financial crisis, Minister Diaconescu said that ‘a new vision is needed on development, based on political will, new mechanisms for fostering economic growth, but also measures of social justice and protection of fundamental human rights and l freedoms.’
The meeting was opened by Senate Speaker Mircea Geoana, and attendees included the FNUAP (United Nations Fund for Population) regional director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Thea Fierens, the president of the Senate Sub-commission for Population and Development , Senator Tudor Udristoiu, as well as many chairpersons of parliamentary commissions.
