Iliescu probe in miners’ riot case, called off

High Court prosecutors decided yesterday to stop criminal investigation of former President Ion Iliescu in the file regarding the 1990 miners’ riot. Prosecutors made the decision based on the same reasons that prompted a cancellation of inquiries against Iliescu in the 1989 revolution case. More specifically, it was found that former magistrate Dan Voinea, who led the Military Prosecutor’s Office Department, committed a series of illegalities in how he handled the investigations. Besides Iliescu, prosecutors called off inquiries against former Romanian Intelligence Service head Virgil Magureanu, former Interior Minister Mihai Chitac, ex Defence Minister Victor Athanasie Stanculescu and other four officials.
