Patriciu: Partnership between Romania and Gazprom – a mistake

Businessman Dinu Patriciu considers that the partnership between Romania and Gazprom for the storage of natural gas is a big mistake, with one of the negative effects set to be Russia’s price monopoly.

‘I don’t believe in the necessity of establishing partnerships with Gazprom for the storage of natural gas within Romania’s depleted deposits. I can tell you for sure that this is a big mistake because Romania’s capacity to store natural gas should be part of an international tender instead of being negotiated directly with a big producer. These natural gas storage sites represent the consumption lever and the one that has that lever wins, not the one that has the reserves,’ Dinu Patriciu stated in an interview for a radio station, Agerpres informs. Likewise, the businessman pointed out the fact that Russia would hold a monopoly over the price of natural gas. In what concerns the Nabucco project, the alternative to the Russian projects, businessman Dinu Patriciu reaffirmed his doubts about the completion of the natural gas pipeline. ‘For now it (the project) does not exist’ the owner of the Rompetrol Holding Group stated.

On the other hand, Patriciu considers that the Black Sea plots leased to the Marine Resources Exploration International (part of Rompetrol Holding) represent a potential from the point of view of alternative energy resources. However that potential could be quantified in two or three years’ time.
