National team defeats Germany and wins Romanian Water polo Cup

Romania’s water polo team has won the Romanian Water polo Cup, an international tournament that took place in Bucharest’s ‘Dinamo’ pool, after defeating Germany in the final day, score 8-7 (0-0, 3-2, 2-3, 3-2). Romania’s goals were scored by: Cosmin Radu (1), Niculae Diaconu (1), Andrei Iosep (2), Alexandru Ghiban (2), Kalman Kadar (2). Germany’s goals were scored by: Marko Savic (1), Marko Stamm (1), Marc Politze (2), Julian Real (1) and Moritz Oeler (2). Kovacs Istvan, the head coach of Romania’s national water polo team, has stated on Sunday that he hopes to finish among the top 8 teams during the World Cup in Rome, a tournament scheduled in July. ‘We want to be among the top 8 teams but we all know that it will be tough. We are glad that we had a good performance in Bucharest. In what concerns the fact that we defeated Hungary, my native country, all I can say that I am neither happy nor sad. True, it was an important game, but this was a training tournament and I want to win every game’ Kovacs Istvan said. He added that the Romanian water polo players will join their Hungarian counterparts in a training session in Hungary next week, as part of the preparations for the World Cup in July.

Romania has won three out of three games, thus winning the competition. Romania defeated Russia (9-4), Hungary (6-5) and Germany (8-7). Hungary has a record of three Olympic gold medals.

In the other game of the final day, Hungary defeated Russia, score 15-2. In the standings Romania was followed by Hungary, Russia and Germany.
