Angela Gheorghiu and Nelly Miricioiu to perform “Tosca” at Royal Opera

The two Romanian sopranos will replace Deborah Voigt in the role of Floria Tosca, in the performance produced by Covent Garden, Cotidianul informs. The Royal Opera had announced the withdrawal of soprano Deborah Voigt from the cast of the long-awaited performance “Tosca” at the Covent Garden, due to be premiered on July 9.

The American soprano canceled all her appearances in the lead role of Puccini’s opera, because of “acute colitis.” Floria Tosca’s role was overtaken, according to the prestigious institution in London, by two Romanian sopranos: Angela Gheorghiu and Nelly Miricioiu.

Angela Gheorghiu thus returns to the role she created in 2006, when “Tosca” was premiered in Paul Browan’s appreciated scenery. Bryn Terfel will perform Scarpia, just like in the respective performance, and Angela Gheorghiu will appear in the performances of July 9, 14 and 16. Angela Gheorghiu is a familiar presence to the loyal fans of the opera performances at the Covent Garden. The institution hosted her international debut in 1992 and opened her path to celebrity after the outstanding “Traviata” premiered in 1994 and performed in the following season as well, starring Gheorghiu as Traviata.

Gheorghiu will replace Voigt in three of the five performances scheduled so far; for the other two, scheduled on July 11 and respectively 18, the lead role will be overtaken by Nelly Miricioiu.
