A resident of Iasi was caught Sunday by police officers at the Drobeta Turnu-Severin border checkpoint, having fraudulently brought into the country by boat tens of thousands of RON worth of goods stolen from Serbian homes, Realitatea TV reports. Among them, jewellery, watches, mobile phones and others, which the man from Iasi admitted to have stolen in order to sell in Romania.

‘The man said he deposited the stolen goods from holiday homes and other buildings in Serbia into a shack he built in the woods,’ Claudiu Vintila of the Mehedinti County Police Department said,’ according to Realitatea TV. The 46-year-old man had a lethal makeshift weapon on him and 50 cartridges for which he didn’t hold a permit. He was taken into preventive custody for 29 days and may serve up to 15 years in jail for qualified theft, smuggling and criminal trespass.
