Film director Mihai Iacob died


The film director Mihai Iacob, famous for his successful productions “The Foreigner,” “Darclee” or “Castle of the Convicted,” passed away in Los Angeles, USA, at the age of 76. Mihai Iacob graduated the University of Theatre and Film in 1955. He was the first author of a film adaptation based on Eminescu’s works in the history of the Romanian film – “Blanca,” – and of the first biographic film “Darclee,” in 1960. “Darclee” became Iacob’s greatest success. The film is inspired by the life and work of the great Romanian soprano Haricleea Darclee – the first Romanian soprano to perform the character “Tosca” in Puccini’s world-famous opera. The film made it into the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival in 1961. In 1971, during a research visit to the USA, he requested political asylum in this country. Afterwards, he became a worker in a knitting factory, a pizza delivery boy, a salesman in a food store, a waiter, a real estate worker, a printing worker, a scriptwriter and finally an associate film producer. Mihai Iacob had directed the following films: “The Foreigner” (1964), “The Famous 702,” (1962), “Darclee,” (1961), “Tom Sawyer” (1967), “Three Times Bucharest,” (1968), “Death of Injun Joe,” (1968), “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” (1968) and “Castle of the Convicted” (1969). He also wrote the screenplays of the films “Three Times Bucharest” (1968) and “Tom Sawyer” (1967).


Lavinia Sandru, cast in “The Liar,” at the Metropolis Theatre


PIN leader Lavinia Sandru was cast in the lead role of the play “The Liar,” due to be premiered this autumn at the Metropolis Theatre in Bucharest, representatives of the institution had declared for Mediafax. Thus, Lavinia Sandru returns to one of her longtime passions – as she had attended the classes of the Theatre Academy in Targu Mures during 1993 – 1997. “The Liar” is a comedy by Jean Jacques Bricaire, directed by Rodica Baitan at the Metropolis Theatre. Beside Lavinia Sandru, the cast of the show also includes Gelu Nitu, Silviu Biris, Monica Davidescu and Alexandra Velniciuc. The scenery was designed by Ioana Popescu. Lavinia Sandru became the President of PIN at the beginning of February, following Cozmin Gusa’s withdrawal from politics.

Hanescu ranks 26th in ATP standings


Romanian tennis player Victor Hanescu has climbed two places and is now ranking 26th in the ATP standings, with this being the best ATP rank of his career, the atpworldtour.com website informs. Hanescu, who was defeated in round three of the Wimbledon tournament, has a total of 1,619 points. Victor Crivoi, the other Romanian in the ATP top 100, has climbed two places and now ranks 85th with 771 points. Crivoi was defeated in round two of the Wimbledon tournament.

Pilot injured in crash-landing


A glider has crash-landed on Monday between the Mihailesti and Clinceni communes. The pilot was injured, a SMURD helicopter being sent on scene.


The pilot was taken to the Floreasca Emergency Hospital. According to the initial investigations, he has thoracic and spinal traumas, Dr. Bogdan Oprita, the coordinator of SMURD Bucharest, stated for Mediafax. The incident was reported at 3.30 PM from Chirculesti locality (Giurgiu County), Mirela Gheta, the spokesperson of the Giurgiu County Police Inspectorate, stated. She pointed out that a single-seat glider was involved in the crash-landing. Police officers were on the scene of the crash, Mirela Gheta added.


Man murdered best pal while hunting


A man was lethally shot by his best friend, by mistake, last Sunday, during a hunting trip in Olt County, Antena 3 reported. The two friends were hunting wild boars and one of them failed to target the weapon properly, shooting his mate. Police officers started an investigation, to establish the precise circumstances of the murder, and the man who shot his friend was arrested. He was charged with murder in the first degree, illegal hunting and illegal possession of weapons and munitions, and risks a sentence of 20 years in prison.


11 persons arrested for drug trafficking and consumption in Constanta


The police officers arrested eleven persons for drug trafficking and consumption after a sudden raid completed last weekend at the seaside resorts, according to Realitatea TV. Moreover, controls performed by the Traffic Police in Mamaia identified 17 drunk drivers. The law enforcement employees applied 80 fines totalizing RON 13,000.


Motorcyclist died after speeding on one wheel


A 34-year-old motorcyclist died on Sunday evening in Oradea, after attempting a risky maneuver without any safety checks, Antena 3 announced. Witnesses mentioned that the motorcyclist was showing off in the traffic, speeding on one wheel. He lost control over the vehicle and was thrown to a distance of a few metres, colliding with a traffic sign in the intersection.


Toddler died after falling from the second floor


A child aged no more than a year and a half died yesterday after falling from the second floor of a block of flats in Botosani city, Agerpres reports. Although he was at home with his mother and grandmother, the boy climbed the window frame and fell out. “When he was brought in, the boy was already dead. We tried our best in order to resuscitate him, but our efforts were useless,” the spokesperson of the Pediatric Hospital in Botosani, doctor Iuliana Kadar declared. Police officers started an investigation in this case in order to establish the circumstances of the accident.


Traffic on DN 72 stopped at the border of Ploiesti to Targoviste


The traffic on the National Road 72 (DN 72) was closed yesterday during 08.00 – 21.00 at the border of Ploiesti to Targoviste, due to rehabilitation works of the underground passage located at the 76th kilometer, Mediafax announced. According to representatives of the Prahova County Police Dept., the traffic was redirected to alternative roads by pilots of the company assigned to restore the passage and by traffic police officers. Engineers estimate that the works will be finalized as soon as possible and traffic will be normal today on DN 72.

33 MAI chiefs total over EUR 18 M of possessions


EUR 18.5 million. This is the equivalent of the possessions declared by 33 chiefs from the Ministry of Administration and Home Affairs (MAI), the journalists from Gandul write. Together, they have 35 flats, 17 individual houses, four holiday houses and 31 cars. The podium is occupied, in order, by Aurel Vasile Sime, chief of Passport Division, with over EUR 2 M. Next comes Ion Dodan, chief of Medical Division with EUR 1.5 M, followed by the chief of the Romanian Police, questor Petre Toba, with EUR 1.35 M. Last year, the biggest salary cashed in the ministry was RON 230,946, by Nicolae Chesnoiu, chief of the General Financial Division.


Sarbu: ‘If I find it necessary, I will resign without being urged to do so’


Labour Minister Marian Sarbu said in Vaslui, on Sunday, that he had no intention to resign for the time being, as some of the trade unions have demanded. ‘We should be talking about resignation in different terms than hara-kiri or seppuku. The resignation is part of the arsenal of individual acts any civil servant and any minister has at his disposal. When and if I think it is necessary, I will do the gesture, without anyone having to urge me to do it. However, for the time being, I believe that my work at the Labour Ministry is for the benefit of many people, including those working in the education system’, Minister Sarbu said, according to Agerpres. He noted that the Labour Ministry was making efforts to harmonise wages in the public sector and that dialogue between the Governmental and the trade unions would continue despite certain discontents.

Mitrea: Hrebenciuc fabricated dossiers against me


On his personal blog yesterday, Miron Mitrea again lashed out at Viorel Hrebenciuc, whom he accuses of standing behind the dossiers ‘fabricated against me’. He also warned that Marian Saniuta and Ion Vasile ‘top the black list’. He also holds that Adrian Nastase too is a victim of Hrebenciuc and Geoana, his prisoner.


‘It’s been a few months since some DGA prosecutors have been going over their heads to fabricate new dossiers against me. More exactly, from the moment I began to write on my blog about their genuine bosses, gathered in a group of whom Hrebenciuc is the exponent, and since I announced I will run for PSD president ,’ Mitrea wrote on his personal blog.


Two policemen under preventive custody for favouring a perpetrator


Two policemen from Viseu de Sus, Maramures, are being held under 29-day preventive arrest for favouring a perpetrator and abuse of office. One of the two was also charged with bribe-taking, in exchange for promises of criminal proceedings not being opened against certain individuals, Mediafax reports. According to the General Anti-corruption Department (DGA) one of the two police demanded, and obtained, sums of money and goods from an individual in exchange for favourable solutions to some dossiers built by him. This is also what a traffic police agent did, against whom prosecutors have evidence he favoured two persons with a police record under investigation for traffic offences.


Romanians are happier than Americans, study shows


The Romanians are happier than Americans, but less happy than Moldovans, a study completed by a British ecological association shows. The association has conceived a chart that places Romania on the 70th position out of 143, Realitatea TV informs.


The considered criteria are the inhabitants’ satisfaction rank, the life expectation and the environment-friendly policies applied in each country. The inhabitants of the Republic of Moldova are on the 32nd position, Bulgarians are on the 82nd place and the first place goes to Costa Ricans, who seem to be the happiest nation in the world, living in perfect harmony with the environment.

The new generation of Audi Q7 models available also in Romania


The German car maker Audi launched, also for the Romanian clients, the new generation of Q7 models, at prices between EUR 45,990 and 47,879, all taxes included, the importer Porsche Romania informs in a press release. The new Q7 brings, in the case of the version 3.0 TDI diesel, the most ecological technology at world level – clean diesel Quattro – with Euro 6 motoring and zero pollution tax. The engine 3.0 TDI develops a power of 176 kW (240 hp) and generates a couple of up to 550 Nm, using during an EU cycle only 9.11 liters of diesel fuel per 100 km. In the case of the model Q7 4.2 TDI Quattro, the use of fuel was significantly improved – between 11.1 and 9.9 liters per 100 km, even if the power generated by the V8 engine increased to 250 kW (340 hp), and the couple to 760 Nm. The model Q7 V12 TDI Quattro, the most powerful SUV in the world, develops a power of 368 kW (500 hp) and a couple of 12,000 Nm.


Arval and Renault, partnership regarding electrical vehicles


The car maker Renault – Nissan and the leasing company Arval enter a partnership regarding the hybrid cars, through which Renault-Nissan will develop until 2011 their own project regarding the electric vehicles, while the leasing company Arval will work out a complex offer of hybrid vehicles, reads a press release remitted yesterday to the media.


The international officials of Renault consider that the electric vehicles represent an important progress in the car technology, which will conduct to the significant decrease of the carbon emissions. This complex range of cars will be available since 2011. The teams of the two partners, Arval and Renault, will contribute to the quick development of some innovative offers in this segment. Concurrently with the launching of Renault eco 2, Renault shifts to a new stage announcing publicly its commitment for a new offer of ecological and economical vehicles. Renault’s commitment in the direction of the ecological vehicles has already materialized in the appearance of the line Renault eco 2, which has a CO2 emission below 140 g/km, and may be used in a proportion of 95 per cent when it is out of action.


AutoItalia extends grace period for Fiat acquisition financing


AutoItalia Group and Impuls Leasing are launching a new financing programme for buyers who are experiencing financial difficulties but who want a new vehicle, Agerpres informs.


Anyone who chooses any Fiat model can start paying for the car in 2011, benefiting up to 18-month grace period. In a first phase, upon signing the agreement and delivery of the car, the customer only pays 50 per cent of the value and four per cent lease commission, and nothing for the rest of 2009 and in 2010, say representatives of the two companies. The customer won’t have to worry about lease payments for a year and a half, during which time he/she can decide on the final payment modality.


Another advantage of the Fiat 50 offer is also the option of paying up the balance in 2011 or of paying in instalments over two years.


CFR employees, finally paid


CFR transferred the wages into the account of the employees on Monday after the staff of several regional departments ceased activities last week due to delayed wage payments, the General Manager of the company, Ion Garoseanu, declared, as quoted by Mediafax.


“The National Tax Administration Agency (ANAF) had blocked our accounts. Now, I was announced that the money was transferred to the employees’ cards and the issue was solved,” Garoseanu explained. ANAF blocked some of the CFR accounts because the payment of the debt to the state budget was also delayed.

Ten days to make 2,300 landfills compliant


Romania has ten days to make almost 2,300 landfills compliant with EU requirements, or receive an infringement notification from Brussels, Agerpres informs. Data of the National Environment Guard (GNM) shows a total of 2,297 non-compliant landfill sites on July1, 2009. GNM head Silvian Ionescu says Romania cannot negotiate the July 16 deadline, but that the actual sanctioning procedure might only start in April 2010. Nonetheless, Ionescu told a TV channel that there had been member states such as Poland or Ireland that got away without paying fines because they resolved the shortcoming during the infringement procedure. GNM has announced an inventory of non-compliant landfills in ten days’ time.


CEN wants to borrow EUR 55 M for environment investment


Energy Center (CEN) Craiova wants to borrow EUR 55 M in order to finance an environment protection investment in its 2 branch, Mediafax informs. The bank that the company will borrow from will be selected through an open bid that will be scheduled on July 30, an announcement issued by the state-owned energy producer shows. The contract, whose goal is to finance an installation that will eliminate the sulfur from the gases resulting from the activity of blocks 1 and 2 of the Craiova 2 branch, will be signed for a 12-year period. For next year CEN Craiova has earmarked environment investments of RON 378.6 M (EUR 98.2 M). In order to comply with the European Commission’s environment standards by 2012 the Centre needs approximately EUR 270 M. The company plans to invest EUR 600-700 M from 2010 to 2016 in order to enhance the energy production capacity, in partnership with other companies. This year CEN Craiova stakes on a net profit of RON 11.4 M, up by 2.7 per cent.


BNR injects RON 4.25 bn into interbank market


The Romanian central Bank (BNR) conducted a repo operation yesterday, injecting a total of RON 4.25 into the market, at an annual interest rate of nine per cent – equal to the key-interest rate, Mediafax informs. The maturity of the operation pumping liquidity into 14 different banks has a month’s maturity on August 6. The most recent similar repo operation has been completed by the central bank on June 26, when it injected RON 5.9 bn at an interest rate of 9.5 per cent per year, also equal to the key-interest rate. Through repo operations, BNR releases liquidity into the market to commercial banks in exchange for government securities. Commercial banks’ overnight deposit interest rates posted on Monday were 8.97 – 9.47 per cent, similar to Friday, and 9 – 9.5 per cent for a week’s deposits, similar to those displayed on Friday which had been 8.99 – 9.49 per cent.


ANOFM: Unemployment rate reaches 6 pc in June


The national unemployment rate stood at 6 per cent in June, 0.2 per cent higher than the one registered the month before, according to the data centralized by the National Employment Agency (ANOFM), Mediafax informs. In total a number of 548,930 unemployed people were registered. The unemployment rate registered in June was 6 per cent compared to 5.8 per cent in May, 5.7 per cent in April and 3.7 per cent in June last year. The total number of the unemployed registered by ANOFM’s County branches stood at 548,930 compared to 526,803 registered in May. Of those, 240,224 were women. In fact, according to the ANOFM, the unemployment rate among women stood at 5.7 per cent compared to 5.4 per cent the month before. Of the total unemployed registered at national level 290,281 receive unemployment benefits.
